ALZHEIMER'S EMPOWERMENT
DARE TO FIND THE BEAUTY

by Maggie Barnes

There are three rooms in this exhibit.

Each room is carefully created to help attendees closely examine
what it means
to stay in relationship with someone who has Alzheimer's.

ROOM  1
I'M STILL HERE
Picture
Displayed alongside a photo of their underpainting, the paintings in this room were created by writing out selected Dr. Dog song lyrics and then painting over the words.  The written out song lyrics represent the soul of the person we love. The painting over of the words represents the profound changes in our loved one.

ROOM  2
CREATING MEANING
Picture
The paintings exhibited in this room were created at a Dr. Dog sound check. They are displayed alongside a magnetic board with lyric snippets.  Much like the refrigerator poetry idea, this interactive room asks attendees to splice together selected words and phrases from various Dr. Dog lyrics to create new and innovative meaning.

ROOM  3
YOU'RE NOT
ALONE
Picture
In the spirit of practicing the willingness to be vulnerable and to let people know what’s going on, all the paintings in this room are created by the attendees themselves. They are given a prompt and asked to create artwork and then leave it at the exhibit for someone else to take home, swapping it out with a piece made by someone who came through the exhibit before them.

How we choose to respond to the life-altering diagnosis of Alzheimer's
has a profound effect on how it is experienced for everyone involved.
