BRIDGING  THE  GAP

~ STAYING  IN  RELATIONSHIP  WITH  SOMEONE  WHO  HAS  ALZHEIMER'S ~
___________
AN   ARTISTIC  NARRATIVE

This multi-media interactive exhibit
gives renewed hope and perspective to guests
whose relationships have been affected by Alzheimer's.

How we choose to respond to the life-altering diagnosis of

Alzheimer's has a profound effect on how it is experienced for everyone involved.

There are three rooms in this exhibit.
Each room was carefully created to help attendees closely examine
what it means to stay in relationship with someone who has Alzheimer's.

ROOM ONE
I'm Still Here

The paintings in this room were created by writing out sel
ected song lyrics by Dr. Dog* and then painting over the words. Each of the paintings is displayed alongside a photograph of its lyrical underpainting.
* Dr. Dog is an innovative Philadephia-based indie rock band.

The written out song lyrics
represent the soul of
the person we love.

Regardless of how much they change, this original form is still the foundation of who
a person is and as such
has enormous importance and
still holds meaning for us.

The painting over of the words represents the profound changes
in our loved one.

If we can fully accept this transformation as our current reality we are blessed with the opportunity to connect and discover additional meaning
and beauty.

ROOM TWO
Creating Meaning

Each of the paintings in the second part of the exhibit was created during a Dr. Dog sound-check before a live show.
There are no lyrics written on the canvas, instead they were created alla prima, each one in about 2 hours, at a sound check.

In this room there will also be a magnetic
board along with  2" tall
magnetic snippets of Dr. Dog lyrics.

Much like the refrigerator poetry idea, attendees can splice together different
words and phrases from various Dr. Dog lyrics to create new and innovative meaning.

At sound check they often practice just bits and pieces of songs,
snippets of their whole work, sometimes over and over again.

There are times when this is all we are given in our relationship with someone who has dementia.

If we take the initiative and engage with the information that is in front of us, a new beauty and meaning with relationship can be created.  It is up to us to rearrange the snippets to have this interactive experience.

But WE must take the initiative and interact in order to create this opportunity.

ROOM THREE
You're Not Alone

Upon entering this room, attendees will find tables full of canvas and art supplies.
All of the artwork displayed in this room has been created by other attendees
who came through the exhibit at an earlier time.
